Sport at Oakfield

At our school, Physical Education and sport play a vital role in developing healthy, confident and active learners. Our PE curriculum is carefully planned in line with the National Curriculum, ensuring that all pupils build fundamental movement skills, improve their physical competence, and develop a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity. Through our PE lessons, children learn the importance of teamwork, fair play, resilience and personal challenge.

Across the school, pupils take part in a wide range of sports and physical activities during PE lessons. These include games such as football and netball, gymnastics, dance, athletics, swimming and outdoor and adventurous activities such as orienteering. Lessons are progressive and engaging, allowing children to develop skills, apply tactics, and understand how to lead healthy, active lives while experiencing a broad and balanced sports curriculum.

We also offer a range of extra-curricular opportunities that enable children to extend their interests and represent the school. These include our athletics team, swimming team and football teams, as well as dance clubs and opportunities to take part in gymnastics competitions. Pupils enjoy participating in multi-sport and orienteering festivals, where they can experience new activities, work with pupils from other schools and celebrate their achievements in a supportive environment. We are proud to be part of the Gateshead School Sport Partnership and regularly take part in their competitions and festivals throughout the year. These events are built around six core values: passion, honesty, teamwork, self-belief, determination and respect. These values strongly reflect our own approach to PE and sport.

Inclusion is at the heart of our PE and sport provision. We are committed to ensuring that every child can take part and succeed, regardless of ability or need. Activities are adapted and differentiated to support all learners, including those with Special Educational Needs, and we place a strong emphasis on encouragement, confidence-building and enjoyment. By offering a wide range of inclusive opportunities, we aim to inspire all children to be active, healthy and happy participants in sport and physical activity.
